I went to a design school where we also had a portfolio show. Ours however was on an effing Friday afternoon. What employer really has time to attend a recruiting event on a Friday, usually one of people’s busiest days of week. They’re trying to prepare for the weekend, make sure deadlines are met, not go downtown and peruse student portfolios.

Even though we had very talented graphic design  and advertising graduates, our only publicity for the event was a stupid postcard and word of mouth. Our advisers pumped up the importance of said show (which flopped for most of us). They forgot to mention the hundreds of dollars we spent putting together our booths was going to be a waste, as hardly any employers actually showed up. Maybe it was the person in charge of our show that ruined it for us as he was demoted right afterward.

Alas, the world goes on.

I’m not  a huge fan of the imagery for today’s campaign, however I enjoy the concept as well as the writing.

Today’s campaign from MADD reminds us that drunk driving ruins families, maims and disfigures people, shatters dreams, and leaves the world an overall worse place to live.

It almost made me want to try it, but then I remembered that beer tastes like piss water. Unless its super fruity, ya know cheerleader beer like apple, pear, or raspberry, then it’s luscious. Yummmm raspberry beer… Delicious.

I digress.

Anyway, that’s what I like, beside this campaign. Even though I prefer not to drink beer, I appreciate the advertising of it.

Anyway, I do like the concept for this campaign, the only criticism I have for it is that the copy is illegible. The script typeface is just to damn hard to read.

I have absolutely no clue if this statistic has any amount of validity, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was correct. Just yesterday in Portland, where I live, two separate groups of homeless people were arrested for squatting in empty houses. A few minutes after the news report about the squatters, a special correspondent on the Today Show presented data showing that rental prices across the country have skyrocketed since the economy collapsed, mainly due to people being unable to buy homes. Simple supply and demand. People need to rent now so, of course, the price goes up. Doesn’t make sense to me at all, but that’s how the world works.

All of this brought to mind the campaign that I’ve chosen for today from A Roof for my Country, a Peruvian organization that builds homes for people in need. They rely completely (100%) on donations to continue their efforts of providing shelter for those that otherwise would go without.

I’m not into the whole Valentine’s day thing. I think it’s idiotic to need a special day to say I love you, when people should just say it everyday. Since when do we have only one day in the whole year in which professing love and devotion should occur, and why for Pete’s sake would materialistic things have anything to do with showing your love? It’s just another excuse for people to spend money they don’t have.

Love Love Love, Be my Valentine (whatever the heck that means) Blah blah blah.

I love the art for this campaign, but the copy’s really clunky / unrefined. Maybe it’s a translation thing, as the ads came to us from Singapore. In spite of the copy, the character’s are intense and scary enough that the campaign works.

“The Coffee is good. So you don’t have to be.”
